Native American Documentaries

Congratulations on producing your first Photostory documentary! The red carpet has been rolled out and movie goers are tuning in to see your work! Now it is time for you to be the movie critic.

What did you think of this project? How does it compare to other class projects you have done and would you recommend it in the future? And most importantly, do you feel you have a better understanding of the standard: Can you describe how early Native American cultures developed in North America?

In your comment, answer these 3 questions. Share something you learned researching your tribe and share something that you learned from watching a classmates documentary.

Remember to read the posts before yours and don’t repeat ideas! If you haven’t watched the documentaries or you need to view them again, they can be found on our class website at: http://pickettsmill.typepad.com/thompson/

Can’t wait to read the reviews!

  1. I really liked doing this project. I think it was better to do it on Photostory and not have to talk so I would recommend doing it again. I think the Native Americans lived through the 800 and1300 because of the time line in the social studies book. The Kwakiutl tribe built houses over 100ft. long and could fit up to 50 people. The Inuit tribe ate fish soup because they needed more food so there would have enough for the whole clan.

    • Well done Jimmy! This is a great comment that sets the bar high for everyone else. :) Unfortunately I had to delete 3 other comments because they did not follow the directions in my post. :( Thank you for doing a good job on your comment.

I am glad you enjoyed working on this project. I had fun helping everyone learn new technology and watching you all learn while having fun!

Your wonderful comment earned you 5 bonus points in social studies! Woo, Hoo!

      Mrs. Thompson

  2. I thought the project was amazing because it would be boring saying the script out loud with out any pictures. So yes I would recommend doing the project again.

The reseach my partner and I did was the Inuit tribe . I understand how the Inuit culture works and how it developed. I also learned that the Hopi tribe had a tradition that the people dance with snakes.

    • Kai,
I’m glad you found this project “not boring” :) and we will use Photostory again because you all did such a good job with it.

You didn’t give me any details or specific things you learned from your research or from what you learned from watching the other documentaries. I need evidence to be able to give you extra credit points for social studies.

You can try again by replying to this message.

  3. Dear Mrs.Thomson

I really thought this project was fun.
I thought this project was better then a lot of my other projects I
did in 1,2,3grade and yes I would recommend you do this
project in the future.I think i lurend a lot more about the native americans
this year.I loved doing this project!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

    from:T.J.

    • Hi TJ,
I am glad you had more fun with this project then any other you’ve done. But like Kai, I need you to give me evidence that you learned something from your research and from the other documentaries. Convince me with details or I can’t award you any extra credit.

Feel free to try again by replying to this message.

      Mrs. Thompson

      • Dear Mrs.Thompson

l learned that the Inuit Indans ate fish soup. Also, I learned that the Hopi Indians lived in adobe homes. They also danced with snakes in their mouths. I would NEVER dance with a snake in my mouth. I learned that my tribe, the Nez Perce tribe, was specialized in fishing. They had two kinds of houses.

I recommend that you use photo story again and that you teach it again to other boys and girls. It was super fun and very exciting. I love photo story. I hope we use it again.

        From,
        T.J.

  4. I thought this project was outstanding!I recomend photostory more than the boreing papers.I think the Native Americans cultures came in the 800 and 1300 because of the time line in the s.s book. This project tought me what the Native Americans dressed like and their ways of life.

    • Hi Rachel,
      “Outstanding” you say? :)

I can’t give you any extra credit either because you repeated a fact someone else already stated and you didn’t give me any details about what you learned about Native American dress or their ways of life.

Try responding with more details/facts by replying to this comment.

      Mrs. Thompson

  5. I DEFINITELY loved this project because it let us express what we have learned in a fun creative way. This project was FAR superior to any project I’ve ever done. I certainly recommend this project in the future and I think every project we do should be like this. I feel extremely confident that I understand the standard. I learned researching my tribe how to say a friendly greeting in Nez Perce. “Hoh.” I learned from other people’s documentaries that the Seminoles lived in the Eastern Woodlands region.

    Your student,
    Caden…..

    • Oops, the Seminoles did not live in the eastern woodland area Caden. If you can correct your statement by responding to this comment, you can earn some extra credit points for social studies. :)

      Mrs. Thompson

      • Oops! The Seminoles lived in Flordia. Sorry. I was thinking of the Cherokee

        Your Student, Caden…..

      • Er, Caden ROSEMOND. Typo.

  6. I learned a lot on one project.I think that the Native Americans devoloped in north America around 800 and 1400 because in the s.s book in the timeline and when I looked on the web at school. I learned that the Semonile tribe lived in Florida. Ilearned that the Inuit tribe used water in fish soup so they have some to go around the tribe.

    • Oops! Tyler you are repeating information already posted. Jimmy stated one of your facts in the very first post!

Try again with a new fact.

      Mrs. T

  7. Dear Mrs. Thompson,
I liked this project. Photostory is a very fun way to do a project. I told my mom about it and she tinks she should do it with her class.I did the Inuuit tribe and they made beautiful soap carvings like polar bears. They also made interesting baskets out of sticks. That is 2 facts I Learned about the Inuit Tribe.

    • Good job Connor, but what did you learn from watching the other videos?

      Read my first post carefully!

      Mrs. T

  8. I think this was super fun. I would recommend this for the future. I think the native american developed in the 800 and the 1300. My 1, 2 ,3 classes didn’t do a lot of fun projects. I like doing these kind of projects better.

    • Hi Molly,
Thanks for being proactive and doing this extra credit assignment, but you’ve repeated information already posted and you didn’t respond to my post accurately.

      Please try again :)
      Mrs. T

  9. Dear Mrs. Thompson, I think this project was the second best because Saving Fred was very fun. But compared to Saving Fred I think I learned more from this Native American project. I would recommend this project definitley. I learned how the Inuit fished whale. They used spears and big boats. I also learned where the Pawnee indians lived. This information helped me to understand the standard.

    • Nice job Carl! You earned 5 bonus points!

  10. Dear Mrs. Thompson,
This project was inspirational because we read the S.S book and did lots of reasearch.I think the Hopi tribue lived in the 800-1400 because of the S.S book.I would defentley recommend in the future because is fun for all ages
and you can get alot of info out of this project. This compears 7/10 (7 for my old class) because we’d just do it for a week on pencil and paper but she made it in a fun way by using the smart board or she’d warm up our brains.
    This was a fun privileage:)

    Sinserly,
    Jaeda

    • Hi Jaeda,
You started off your comment very clearly but by the end I was confused. Can you re-write and try again for extra credit?

      Mrs. Thompson

    • Dear Mrs.Thompson,
This project was fabulos. Everyone did great on there project. This project compears way better than my old class my old class youd write it down. Yes i would recomend this in the future because its pure fun and you can learn alot of info.I think the Hopi indans come in the 800-1400 because of the time line in the S.S book
      Sincerliy,
      Jaeda

  11. Dear Mrs.Thompson,

I was so exited when everyone voted for photostory. Because i wanted to learn how to use new technology. I was bursting with excitment. I recommened this project to people who like to use technology and who like to write, If i could rate this project i would give it 5 out of 5 stars. I feel that I have a better understanding of the standard because I will remember my first photostory presentation forever. I learned that the Hopi Tribe built their houses facing rivers, lakes, and oceans. I also learned that they lived in long houses made of dirt that can fit 50 people in it. To get up to the houses you had to use a ladder made of branches, This was a fun project and I really enjoyed it.

    Sincerely,
    Rishi Desai

    • Well done Rishi! You just earned 5 bonus points! Woo, Hoo for you!

      Mrs. T

  12. Dear Mrs. Thompson,

I had a great time doing this project and I would love to do it again. I learned that the Kwakiutl tribe had pit houses and pit houses faced the sea. I also learned from the Hopi tribe what they specialized in. They specialized in pottery and that the sun made the clay hard. Another reason I liked this project is because I was able to learn more about the Seminole tribe that I might not have ever known. I think its really cool that the Seminole tribe carved a dug out tree into a canoe.

This project was awesome compared to the save the gummy worm Fred project because I feel like I learned more. I will probably remember what I learned even as I get older.

Thank you Mrs. Thompson for allowing us to do photo story.

    Cameron

    • You are so welcome Cameron. I’m glad you enjoyed the project and hope you will always remember the fun way you first learned about the Native Americans. Remember, you guys voted for this project so it was your choice. I’m glad you all voted on it too!

You wrote a very well written comment so you earned yourself 5 extra bonus points! Way to be proactive!

      Mrs. T

  13. Dear Mrs.Thompson,

I enjoyed doing this project. It was fun because, I learned something new and it was different from anything I had done in third grade. Chase, was my partner and we had so much fun working together. Our favorite part was when we recorded our voices. I like using photostory and have a better understanding of the standard and the Seminole tribe lifestyle. I hope we can do another project like this again. I would give this project a 10 on a scale of 1-10.

    Your student,
    Aidan Spencer

    • Hi Aidan,
You and Chase did work very well together! I’m glad to hear you enjoyed the project but I also need to hear some facts that you learned from your researching and from watching your classmates’ videos.

Can you add some detail to your comment by replying to this comment?

      Good luck!

      Mrs. T

  14. Dear Mrs.Thompson

I have learned a lot on this project.I think the Native Americans came to America around the 700 and the 1400 because when I was on the computer at school it was around the 700 and 1400.I learned that the Seminole tribe lived in Florida.I learned that the Inuit tribe used water in soup so they have enough.

    • Good job giving me two new facts that you learned! You now have earned five bonus points! :)

      Mrs. Thompson

  15. Mrs. Thompson:

I thought this project was very fun, and thought it was good that we were trying a new thing. It’s way better than other projects I have done in my other classes. I would definitely recommend this type of project to other classmates and teachers in the future. After this project I’ve really gotten to know North America and the Indians that lived here. I learned that the Inuit Tribe lived in very snowy weather. I learned about my own tribe too, and that they used animal poop for fuel for their fires. I can’t believe it – it’s so gross! I’ve never done a video before and I thought it was fun. I hope we do this again. You are the best teacher ever! Love Savannah

    • Thanks for the nice compliment Savannah! I’m glad you enjoyed this activity. Thanks for reading everyone’s comments and giving me two new facts that you learned. You have earned yourself five extra bonus points! :)

      Mrs. Thompson

  16. Wow! I enjoyed reading your comments about your Photo Story projects. It sounds like you learned a great deal about Native Americans. I can’t wait to view your projects! Love, Ms. Chesser

    • Hi Mrs. Chesser!
I hope you are feeling better. We miss you! Thanks so much for stopping by our blog and posting a comment. Hurry back!

      Mrs. Thompson

  17. Dear Mrs. Thompson,
I learned that the Seminole tribe made baskets out of sticks.I also learned that the Hopi tribe ate buffulo. That is two facts I learned about the Seminole & the Hopi Tribes.

  18. I think that the project was fun an very educatoinal. This project can never compare to any other projects i have ever done in my life because i have never done such a big and fun project. I would recomend it to someone in the future so tha they can do reaseach and make a documantary to. I think i have a better understanding of how the indians lived back in the day. If i could describe how early native american cultures devolped in north america I would say in the early days like in the year of 1514.
P.S. That was the most funnest projects i have ever done!!!!!

  19. I liked this project because it was my first time using photostory. This was the best project ever.Yes I would reccomned it.Yes I now understand the standard better.

  20. Dear Mrs.T
I loved doing Photostory because if we didn’t use I’d be bored to death, exept thanks to Photostory it was really fun!! I also liked learning about Native Americans.

    Your student,
    Karishma

  21. Dear Mrs.Thompson,

I learned alot about the Seminole tribe. They like to eat many wild animals, like deer, squirrels, turtles and birds. They lived in houses called Chickees or Round houses for their shape. From Gabby and Carl’s documentary of the Paweeny tribe, I learned that they relied on the Buffalo for many resources. They used their skins for teepees and clothing and made fuel out of Buffalo chips.

    Your Student,
    Aidan

  22. I learned so much about EVERY tribe! This was a great way to teach us.The Native Americans cross the Bering land bridge because the animals migrated and they ate animals.

  23. I thought that this project was the best project I have ever done because I have never done a project that you get to make a movie. At first when you said that we were going to make a movie I got so confused. This project can never compare to any other project I have ever done because the only projects I ever do is when you have to do research and write it down on a piece of paper. I would recomend this to other people in the future because I would want let other people to do a lot of research, put pictures, and watch their documantarys together. I think I have a better understanding of this standard so that when the CRCT comes I will be ready. I learned that indians devolped long ago and that the Inuit indians had to put water in their food to make more of it .
Ex: The fish soup that Caroline and Jonathon Brought in.

  24. Dear Mrs. Thompson,

I thought this project was fun because you taught us how to use photo story. This project was more fun compared to the economy project because instead of doing a poster we got to do a movie. In my opinion movies are more fun than making posters because we get to go on the Internet and research different fact about our tribes. Yes, I recommend this project because instead of taking notes we got to use the internet to get back ground pictures and information. I do have a better understanding about how Native Americans developed in this country. I learned that the Pawnee tribe lived in the plains and used buffalos for different tools and meat. I learned that the Hopi Indians farmed beans, corn and squash.

    From, Laila P.

  25. Thanks everyone for blogging! Time is up! Any comments posted after this message will not count toward extra credit!

    Mrs. Thompson

  26. Great job Mrs. Thompson’s fourth graders on your Native American Documentaries! I enjoyed viewing all your photo stories! Keep up the awesome job of learning!

    Hugs & Smiles,
    Mrs. Ewers

  27. hey Mrs. T! Middle School is so easy! Thank you so much for helping me last year! I had so much fun last year! Thanks for being hard on me last year. Belive it or not I have turned in every single piece of homework this year! All my grades are over a 93 so far :) .

    Dear fourth graders,

if you want to survive the year you have to do all of your homework and finish all your work in class and don’t back talk and do everything she says when she says.

    • LOL! Rett you are too funny! I really am glad to hear that you are doing so well in middle school….but I knew you would do well! You are awesome!

Thanks for giving the fourth graders such “wise” tips! :) We are having a great time in fourth grade.

Please keep in touch and come visit in person some time :) I would love to see you!
